Who the organisation is

Sustrans is the UK’s leading sustainable transport charity.

What the organisation does

Sustrans is the practical charity behind the National Cycle Network and Safe Routes to School.  Our vision is a world in which people can choose to travel in ways that benefit their health and the environment.

Current priorities

  • Sustrans Cymru is developing a Valleys Cycle Network, with the aid of EU funding. The 250 mile network of walking and cycling paths will extend the NCN to within 2 miles of over a million people through the south Wales Valleys.
  • Our ’Connect2’ bid for the Big Lottery’s People’s Millions will work with nine communities across Wales to overcome long-standing barriers such as busy roads, railways or rivers that are dividing communities and making it difficult for people to travel by foot or bike as part of their everyday lives.
  • Meanwhile our Active Travel team are working with sedentary people in communities across Wales to increase physical activity in their daily lives.

How you can get involved

Volunteer Rangers Rangers act as the 'eyes and ears' for Sustrans and local authorities, ensuring that National Cycle Network routes are kept as safe and as attractive as possible for cyclists, walkers and wheelchair users. There are over 2,000 Sustrans volunteer Rangers throughout the UK, each looking after a section of the National Cycle Network near their home.   Rangers also play an essential role helping to promote the National Cycle Network, Sustrans, and cycling, thereby increasing the use of the routes. Rangers come from all walks of life and all age groups.
