Halting biodiversity loss is very important to WEL members. The State of Nature (2013) report showed that, across the UK, 60% of our native species have declined over the previous 50 years. The EU Biodiversity Strategy aims to to halt the loss of biodiversity in the EU by 2020. To maximise Wales’ contribution to this aim, WEL would like:
- politicians in Wales to have a greater awareness of the issues facing priority species and biodiversity as a whole in Wales (see our Species Champions Project)
- an effective Nature Recovery Plan, featuring actions that will deliver for biodiversity in Wales
- an improved network of special sites for nature, securing appropriate management and making them “more, bigger, better and joined”.
- a strategic approach to funding delivery for nature, targeting priorities and identifying innovative private and public sources of finance in addition to traditional sources
