Marine Working Group (MWG)

MWG is a group of environmental charities in Wales who are working together to ensure that we have well-managed, clean, healthy, safe, productive and biologically diverse oceans and seas.  To this end we are calling on the Welsh Government, the Natural Resources body for Wales and the wider marine community to:
•    Support the delivery of Good Environmental Status (GES) in UK Waters by 2020.
•    Implement ecosystem based Marine Spatial Planning in Welsh waters.
•    Deliver a well managed and Ecologically Coherent Network of Marine Protected Areas by 2016.
•    Ensure Welsh fisheries are sustainable now and for future generations.

Three Marine Officers, in conjunction with other member organisations are responsible for the implementation of the campaign. For more information about the member organisations, please click on the links below and to contact the marine officers, please click here

This campaign has been kindly funded by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation and the Waterloo Foundation.

MWG, together with our sister Link Organisations - Wildlife and Countryside Link (in England), Scottish Environment LINK and the Northern Ireland Marine Task Force, have been campaigning for many years for comprehensive marine laws to protect our seas and enable recovery of damaged areas. Securing the UK Marine and Coastal Access Act (2009) was a key success from this collaboration and we continue to push for its effective implementation. This vital piece of legislation provides the tools that the Welsh Government needs to improve marine management in Wales, by putting in place better systems for marine conservation and sustainable development of the Welsh marine environment.
